The sunshine of September brings you to Beijing Normal University, and we are glad you become one member of us, the School of Artificial Intelligence.

In this home, there are teachers who will never be impatient with educating, and brother-like schoolmates. It is here where you are going to spend the most unforgettable time of your youth, and you may change the style of life and study to explore the infinite thought and spiritual power. You will constantly impro
ve yourself, to be perfect, by learning to be, learning to do, and learning to study. What you should remember is that diligence is the only way to study, and honesty is the foundation of a man. You are going to enjoy the sweet dew of the knowledge in the bright classroom, to build a path leading the soul in the tranquil library, to blossom your passion in the colorful stage, and to find the lifelong friends in the warm campus.

New term, new environment, and the new start; well begun is half done. You own the key to success. You should learn to absorb the knowledge of every aspect, form a good habit of study and life, and refresh yourself to the busy study and life. “There is no royal road to learning.” I believe you will perish the precious youth, be determined to work hard, and sow the seeds of the harvest for the splendid future.

I sincerely hope that you will love CIST as you love your home, and also love the university, contributing your intelligence to the development of the School of Artificial Intelligence and BNU. You are young, vibrant, and healthy, so you bear the responsibility of society, the expectation of parents and teachers, and the dream of the future. I believe that you will compose a piece of magnificent music of your life with your intelligence, diligence and integrity. And I also believe you will spend your college life with the positive altitude of “self-confidence, self-improvement, optimism and tolerance”. The predecessor of the School of Artificial Intelligence of Beijing Normal University is the wireless electronics major in Physics Department, which formally recruited students from 1964. The 1980 saw the establishment of the Wireless Electronics Department; subsequently, education technology major and computer major were established in 1985 and 1987 respectively. Based on Wireless Electronics Department, Department of Information Technology and Manage Science and computer science major in Mathematical Department, the College of Information Science was founded in 1998, which includes Electronics Department, Computer Science Department, Department of Information Technology and Manage Science and Department of Education Technology Science. With Department of Information Technology and Manage Science merging into the School of Management in 2001 and Department of Education Technology Science developing into the School of Education Technology in 2004, it is by that time that the College of Information Science was renamed as the College of Information Science and Technology.

Now the School of Artificial Intelligence consists of two departments and many science research centers, namely the Department of Electronics Science and Technology and the Department of Computer Science and Technology, aiming to train the students to be the experts of research and application on information science and technology. There are two bachelor’s degree programs in the Electronics Science and the Computer Science, and six master’s degree programs in the Communication and Information Systems, Signal and Information Processing, Computer Software and Theory, Computer Applied Technology, Computer Architecture, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent System. Right now there are 327 undergraduate students, 197 graduate students and 22 joint-training doctoral students.

Nowadays in the School of Artificial Intelligence, there exists a group of high-qualified and rationally structured teaching staff, including 61 full-time professional teachers, of whom 14 are Professors, 26 are Associate Professors, 5 senior engineers and 16 lecturers. Statistically, 78 percent of teachers obtained PhDs. Recently, a group of young academic elites, having overseas working experience and post-doctoral degree, have joined our team, which increases the vitality of teaching and research and builds a solid foundation for sustainable development of our college.

Since 2006, the school has made historical breakthrough in the number of state-level scientific research projects, which backed by the fact that the college has obtained 7 General Projects of NSFC, one Overseas Outstanding Youth Fund and one State 863 Planning Project. In 2010, the college is undertaking 11 General Projects of NSFC, one key Science Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and one General Project Beijing WWF. And in the same time the project funds amount to nearly three million yuan. Especially, the project “The Research on Restoration of Three-Dimensional Damaged Rigid and its Application in the Virtual Restoration of the Culture Relic” which was completed under the leadership of the Professor Zhou Ming-quan, the dean of the college, was awarded the second prize of 2006 Annual Science and Technology Progress Award in the Ministry of Education.

The school actively conducts the domestic and international cooperation in talent training all of the time. Domestically, the school constantly strengthens the construction of the lab and the training base and cooperates with enterprises such as the Digital China Corp., Zhongguancun International Incubator (in Beijing) base of software talents and so on, so that it has initially formed the practical teaching system owned the main body connected with several other organizations. As to the international, the school has maintained good cooperative relations in talent training with many first-class universities abroad in various forms such as students exchanging and training together and so on. So far, the school has planed to exchange undergraduates and train cooperatively with the Groept University in Belgium, the Asia University and the GuangYun University in South Korean, the Bordeaux University in France and the George Mason University in America.

Besides, the school encourages the students to actively participate in scientific research, innovation activities and various competitions. In recent years, the academy students have published more than 150 academic articles and have won over 100 internal and external awards as participating in contests such as the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest, Mathematical Modeling and Computer Application Competition, English Contests and the Students Entrepreneurship Contest and also various some other activities.
